This dish will fill your home with the sweet fragrance of oranges as they grace the bread slices to make a gorgeous evening snack.
I had been eyeing this last orange that was standing out among the apples in my fruit basket atop the dining table. And my mind kept going back to the flavours of my orange-ginger pie from the other day (click here for my easy recipe for a stunning orange-ginger pie). And thus, the recipe for this super simple dish came into being.
I wanted to keep it simple. I did not intend to spend too much time prepping. I also wanted something that was hands down an “orange” dish. And these baked beauties gave me just that! The sweet aroma of oranges filled up my home with so much anticipation. The bread slices soaked up all the lovely flavours of the orange.
I do suggest using parchment paper to line your baking dish. While the slices turned a beautiful brown with gorgeous crispy edges when baked without parchment lining, you may end up with sticky bottoms without parchment paper.
While the recipe mentions soaking the slices in a mix of a beaten egg and milk, you may choose to omit the egg and try with just the milk. Lets go!
INGREDIENTS
Bread slices with edges trimmed off
1 egg
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp honey
1 orange - 1/4 inch slices for the bread and juice of remaining pieces
A pinch of cinnamon
A pinch of salt
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp orange or any other fruit jam, if available
METHOD
Grease your parchment paper lined baking dish and preheat your oven to 200 C.
Lightly beat the egg and milk together in a wide base bowl.
Dip the bread slices one by one into this egg and milk mix and place them directly in the baking dish.
Drizzle the honey over the slices.
Place your orange slices over the bread slices and drizzle the remaining orange juice.
Sprinkle the salt and cinnamon powder over the baking dish.
Dot the entire spread with jam and butter.
Bake for 25 minutes at 200 C.
Let it cool a bit and serve while still warm.
I hope you enjoyed this recipe.
